Among the 34,000 donors to the GoFundMe campaign so far are several who said in notes that they were Jewish and explained why they donated unusual sums, in multiples of $18.
Born in the town of Nayrab in Syria’s Idlib province, Al-Ahmed migrated to Australia in 2006, years before the 2011 uprising against President Bashar al-Assad escalated into a full-scale civil war. His cousin, Mohammad al-Ahmed, told AP that the viral video of the Bondi Beach attack has made Al-Ahmed a household name in Nayrab.
