IBM is buying data infrastructure company Confluent for $11 billion in cash in a bid to to bolster its data and automation products as ever more companies move their tech operations to the cloud and deploy AI technology.

IBM acquired cloud software maker HashiCorp for $6.4 billion in 2024 and Apptio in a deal worth $4.6 billion in 2023. IBM says the deal builds on those investments. Shares of Confluent soared 29% while IBM stock climbed about 1% upon the news, according to CNBC.
