Elam was a member of the Meadow View Old Order Mennonite Church and a retired farmer. He had still enjoyed his craft and wood working shop at home.

Elizabeth was a member of New Covenant Tabernacle Church and enjoyed signing in a local gospel group, The Gospel Velvetones.
