Samoa Joe has just taken time to pay a quick tribute to John Cena tonight at AEW Winter is Coming. This comes a few days before the WWE icon is set to compete in his retirement match.

After Samoa Joe referenced him on AEW Dynamite last night, John Cena returned the favor with a post on Instagram.

Samoa Joe paid tribute to John Cena at AEW Dynamite Winter is Coming, giving a salute as he had Eddie Kingston locked in an STF (U). Joe and Cena trained together very early in their career at UPW in California. Their paths would cross again in 2017 in WWE where they wrestled against each other on a handful of occasions.

During the title match, Samoa Joe decided to pay tribute to the 17-time WWE World Champion. Even as a heel, he honored Cena by hitting the Attitude Adjustment, locking in the STF and giving a Cena-style salute to the camera. Kingston eventually escaped by biting Joe's hand, but the moment was clear a respectful nod to Cena's legacy.
