Western Painted Turtles are the most widespread native turtle species in North America, yet they’re endangered due to habitat loss, road mortality, invasive predators, and pollution. These turtles travel between wetlands and upland nesting areas. Unfortunately, that means crossing roads (especially in spring and summer) which is a huge risk for being run over.
